A few weeks ago I got an email out of the blue asking if I host gatherings for amateur milliners, because this person missed going to Rose Cory’s super awesome space in Lewisham…. That got me thinking… I miss that space too…. No one in central London does this…. Cue; LIGHT-BULB MOMENT!!!
So, starting in July, the Sahar Millinery studio will host a weekly workshop space for milliners. Aimed for hobbyists, amateurs, students and milliners starting out and millinery professionals to get together to make and create, finesse skills and build on existing knowledge.
Sahar provides the space and her equipment and you come with your materials and together we create the good vibes!
Every Tuesday; One session in the afternoon (3 – 6pm) and another in the evening (6 – 9pm) – you can come to one, or both, every week or one-off.
This is a hybrid between a weekly co-working space and a hat making workshop, where some 1:1 help / teaching will be available. So the cost is a sliding scale dependent on how much teaching / 1:1 help you need. For example for each 3 hour session if you need no teaching then the cost will be £45, but if you are quite new to millinery and need a fair bit of tuition then it’s £90. Or you might be in-between. We’ll assess this on the first session and as you go.
These workshops are not suitable for total beginners, they are designed for you to practice and built on what you already know. Examples:
- You’ve blocked a few parasisal percher hats, but never a 2-piece – That’s fine, come along and we’ll help you out!
- You’ve blocked a Parasisal 2-piece but never a Panama – That’s fine, come along and we’ll help you out!
- You’ve blocked a Felt percher but never used sinamay – Hmm not fine – completely different technique and you need to do a class in sinamay first.
- You’re curious about buntal mats, never used them and would love to try – Again – not in this session – a new material and you’ll need to do a class first then come along to the workshop to practice and experiment because we won’t be able to do a 1:1 for something entirely new. However, we are open to negotiation – if there are, say 5 of you who ALL want to learn buntal mats, then we can be persuaded!
We’d LOVE to see full-on experimentation between the various materials and techniques you already know and how to navigate to bring them into new realms and create competition-worthy pieces.
