Summer is here it’s time for a new hat, so why not try making your own?

Learn how to use Sinamay and netting, make a hat base, shape feathers, and many other millinery techniques and walk away with your own hat / fascinator worthy of Ascot or a wedding – or bride and mother of the bride!

In this workshop the participants learn how hats are made and formed. We will focus on using Sinamay – which is the most used material that summer hats are made from. Participants will have a go using the material, and making their own fascinator bases. Sahar will also show other hat making materials including felts, straw, buckrum and how they are used to make hats. A selection of hats in styles of 1920s to 1950’s will be available to try, as well as the wooden hat blocks which were used to make the hats and a selection of books of vintage hats to inspire your creations.

Sahar will provide all materials such as sinamay, feathers, net veiling, gems and all sorts of adornments. She will show you techniques in feather manipulation and help you design your perfect fascinator. If you have something special eg a brooch or piece of fabric, please bring it along and see if we can incorporate into your hat! If you have an outfit in mind to match your hat with, feel free to bring it along. This is a great first crash course in hat making for people who are curious in the art of millinery and those who would like to learn a new craft, as well as those who just want a new hat!

About Sahar: Sahar Freemantle has been designing and making hats for 7 years, and is based in London. With a background in costume design, Sahar makes for TV including Downton Abbey, and does bespoke creations for women going to summer events, as well as performers on stage and exhibitions. Sahar has two millinery labels: Sahar Millinery and UglyLovely. Sahar hand crafts each hat to create original and unique pieces designed to flatter the wearer. Both brands use traditional millinery techniques, and whereas Sahar Millinery brings a timeless vintage style elegance, UglyLovely is more macabre. This class will be more inspired by the Sahar Millinery style.
